MINT is a traffic and mobility agency, based in Mechelen, which has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years. MINT provides high-quality and dependable mobility advice for towns and cities, local authorities, government departments, the NMBS/SNCB, De Lijn and various large private companies and project developers. Projects include traffic flow plans, road traffic models, cycle surveys and parking studies.
When it was first established in 2007, MINT handled its own IT internally using Google services. But with 15 years of constant growth behind it, the agency staff headcount has risen from 5 then to more than 30 employees today. And with new projects arriving continuously, the agency estimates it will increase its staff by an additional 2 or 3 employees per year over the coming years.
Calculating road traffic models requires very powerful and effective hardware systems. Previously, this meant that our local servers had to run day and night to keep up with demand. Today, we have Cloud servers that are only called on by our people when we actually need that level of computing power.
The number and size of the road traffic plans and models worked on has also grown exponentially over the years. Road traffic models involve calculations based on big data, such as population figures, employment numbers and traffic statistics. Handling variables of this type quickly generates volumes of results that often run into dozens of gigabytes.
Until recently, these databases were managed on local servers, but this had begun to have a direct impact on the security and quality of backups, as well as on the ease of accessing the data. So the time had come to adopt a high-performance Cloud solution.
